چکیده

The present study investigates the effect on auditory stream segregation of the duration of silent gaps between items of a repeating sequence of sine tone stimuli. While previous investigators had •hown that gaps reduced the tendency for items to segregate, the present experiment showed that this was not the case; rather, in adjusting tone durations for stream segregation thresholds, subjects imply compensated for increased gap duration, keeping the total time (tone duration plus gap duration) constant.

Build-up of auditory stream segregation induced by tone sequences of constant or alternating frequency and the resetting effects of single deviants.

A sequence of constant-frequency tones can promote streaming in a subsequent sequence of alternating-frequency tones, but why this effect occurs is not fully understood and its time course has not been investigated. Experiment 1 used a 2.0-s-long constant-frequency inducer (10 repetitions of a low-frequency pure tone) to promote segregation in a subsequent, 1.2-s test sequence of alternating lo...

The Effect of Working Memory Training on Auditory Stream Segregation in Auditory Processing Disorders Children

Objectives: This study investigated the efficacy of working memory training for improving working memory capacity and related auditory stream segregation in auditory processing disorders children. Methods: Fifteen subjects (9-11 years), clinically diagnosed with auditory processing disorder participated in this non-randomized case-controlled trial. Working memory abilities and auditory strea...

Relation between Working Memory Capacity and Auditory Stream Segregation in Children with Auditory Processing Disorder

Background: This study assessed the relationship between working memory capacity and auditory stream segregation by using the concurrent minimum audible angle in children with a diagnosed auditory processing disorder (APD).Methods: The participants in this cross-sectional, comparative study were 20 typically developing children and 15 children with a diagnosed APD (age, 9–11 years) according to...

Effects of Attention on Neuroelectric Correlates of Auditory Stream Segregation

A general assumption underlying auditory scene analysis is that the initial grouping of acoustic elements is independent of attention. The effects of attention on auditory stream segregation were investigated by recording event-related potentials (ERPs) while participants either attended to sound stimuli and indicated whether they heard one or two streams or watched a muted movie. The stimuli w...

The effect of stimulus context on the buildup to stream segregation

Stream segregation is the process by which the auditory system disentangles the mixture of sound inputs into discrete sources that cohere across time. The length of time required for this to occur is termed the "buildup" period. In the current study, we used the buildup period as an index of how quickly sounds are segregated into constituent parts. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that st...
